October 3rd, 1990, less than one year after the fall of the Berlin Wall, marked the completion of reunification of Germany. It is one of the most joyous days in German culture, and to us here at HODINKEE and the rest of the watch world, it is a day that set us out to witness some of the most creative, thoughtful, and innovative watchmaking we would see in our lifetimes.

The name “A. Lange & Söhne” did not appear on the dial of a watch for forty 45 years. The artisan craft of haute horlogerie practiced in Glashütte was replaced by utilitarian watchmaking – simple watches, for not so simple times.

It was Germany reunifcation day that set Mr. Walter Lange on a course to rebuild his family’s legacy, and eventually bring us the brand that we know today. A. Lange & Söhne has prepared a stirring look at what this day means to them, in advance of the October 24th celebration of 20 years of modern Lange.

It should be noted that much of this footage has never been seen before and we at HODINKEE are honored to share it with you.
